Benzene Exposure: When It Invades Your Home
People do a lot of things to make their homes safe and healthy. Many people got worried when the news broke out about being exposed to the toxic substance benzene even if you are inside the comforts of your own home. If homes aren't safe from this toxic compound, how much more is the world outside?
Benzene had found its way inside homes through consumer products such as glues, detergents, paints, and stain removers. Before, this compound is even used in aftershave colognes and body lotions because of its pleasant smell. In a study done in 1995, it was found out that there was indeed higher levels of benzene found in homes today than it was decades ago. This caused an alarm across the continent, urging the government to look deeper into the use of this very harmful compound.
The study was conducted in homes located in Anchorage by the University of Washington and the Municipal Department of Health and Human Services. With the grant they obtained, they took air samples from fifty homes within the area. They found out that the homes with attached garages have higher levels of benzene in the air. As such, the people living there are exposed to the harmful substance day in and day out.
Being exposed to benzene can lead to a host of diseases. The worse case is associated to acquiring acute myelogenous leukemia, a type of disease that involves the production of cancer cells in the blood. Leukemia prevents the while blood cells from growing properly. White blood cells are the main components of the body's immune system. With them impaired, the body becomes more prone to developing other diseases. This is a life-threatening condition brought about by exposure to benzene.
The first step to making a home benzene-free is to be a wise consumer. When buying household chemicals, check into the label first. Be sure that the products you'll buy contain no benzene or benzene derivatives. Benzene can be absorbed by the skin and can be inhaled. When exposed to this substance regularly, major health problems occur.
The move to take out benzene in home products is strongly being fought right now. Benzene is a very useful chemical, no doubt about that. But because it poses to be very hazardous to the health, people are starting to doubt whether the goodness of this substance can overshadow its ill effects. People who are currently exposed or have been exposed to the chemical benzene and are suffering from severe medical conditions because of it are encouraged to talk to a benzene lawyer to help forward their case.
